Creation or Evolution
Does It Really Matter What You Believe?
Creationism or Evolution: Does it really matter what you believe? Is a pamphlet produced, and distributed for free, by the Universal Church of God. The aim of the pamphlet, as should be fairly clear, is to give the ‘evidence’ that not only is Darwin’s theory of evolution untrue but that it is socially harmful. I’m going to read through this pamphlet and as I do I’ll post up a wee review of each chapter. I’ll aim to have a chapter up each week as there is only so much of this stuff that I can handle in one sitting. 😀
If you’re wondering how I happened to have a copy of a creationist pamphlet to hand it’s because I signed my partner up to a bunch of mailing lists for a giggle. I now get emails from a whole host of crazy Christians thanks to her though. 😦
So here we go…
Part 1: Society’s Dramatic Shift
The Bible was long accepted as a true and reliable account of our origins. But then Darwin’s theory of evolution took the world by storm, with predictable and tragic consequences – proof that what we believe does matter.
- If by accepted you mean either no choice but to accept it for fear of punishment or simply ignorance of future scientific discoveries….
- Aside from all those people who believed something else like the Hindus, followers of animist traditions, followers of Shinto, Buddhists. Or all those people throughout history who believed something else for far longer than the Bible has existed…
- Aye, like that pesky modern medicine which has led to longer, healthier happier lives for millions of people. Absolutely tragic.
- I actually agree with that… O_O
The pamphlet proper starts with the usual creationist whining and falsehoods. lamenting that it is no longer illegal to teach evolution, or, you know, science, in schools throughout the U.S.A. and claims that the Bible is now ‘banned’ from the classroom. I think that if they check their constitution then they will find that the separation of church and state has been around slightly longer than Darwin’s theory…
I get the feeling that I am going to see this idea that evolution proposes humanity is somehow at the ‘pinnacle’ of the evolutionary process repeatedly throughout this pamphlet. Which isn’t really surprising when a large amount of the appeal of religion, to some, is the sense that the individual is special and that we are fundamentally different to other forms of life.
The infantilisation of adults is a common theme in religions, especially Christianity. By maintaining a parent/child relationship between people and their ‘creator’ the religion takes advantage of the instinctual trust we have for our parents. Now if this isn’t unhealthy for a society I don’t know what is! By maintaining this mindset it helps people avoid taking responsibility for their actions/lives. Meh, back to the pamphlet.
So after the usual greeting about being denied access to young minds in schools we have a doozy of a quote from Wernher von Braun. I get the feeling this is going to be watching an exercise in clutching at straws if their opening salvo is a 40 year old quote from a dead Nazi…
I know, I know I should be playing the ball not the man but surely if you’re going to be claiming that Evolution is a socially destructive ‘ideology’ you probably shouldn’t open with someone who agrees with you who also played a part in one of the greatest atrocities of the 20th century. Just sayin…
Also why you would be quoting a physicist/engineer when you want to discuss biology is beyond me…
Human Reproduction Argues Against Evolution
To be honest, if you’re arguing whilst reproducing you are doing it soooo wrong. 😀
If human beings are the pinnacle of the evolutionary process, how is it that we have the disadvantage of requiring a member of the opposite sex to reproduce, when lower forms of life – such as bacteria, viruses and protozoa – are sexless and far more prolific? If they can reproduce by far simpler methods, why can’t we? If evolution is true, what went wrong?
Aside from the theory of evolution makes no such claim about humanity being at the pinnacle of anything! It says that over time through a series of small random mutations individuals that are better suited to their environment will be more likely to survive and therefore pass on their genes with the beneficial mutation. Environments change and therefore so do organisms so there is no ‘pinnacle’ of the evolutionary process. Organisms that are evolved to suit their environment survive and flourish those that aren’t fail and die out. It’s really not that difficult.
And as for why do we have to bump uglies in order to spit out a kid or two? Can these people not google?
Regrettably, such obvious flaws in the theory are overlooked.
But they aren’t flaws. They are understood. A flaw is, for example, basing your argument on a false premise. An example of this would be “human beings are the pinnacle of the evolutionary process”. See what I’m getting at?
A World View With Far Reaching Implications
I was a young man with uninformed ideas. I threw out queries, suggestions, wondering all the time over everything; and to my astonishment the ideas took like wildfire. People made a religion of them.
It seems that Creationists seem to have missed that whole irksome ninth commandment thing. You see that quote above, which they trot out proudly here as if to say “look, look even your GOD changed his mind!” is a fabricated death bed confession by Charles Darwin. Fabricated by Lady Elizabeth Hope which just goes to show that Christians lying to protect their god goes back a long way.
In Europe, in particular, belief in a personal god has plummeted.
Yup, that pesky godless Yoo-rope with it’s socialis
edt health care and higher quality of life than the ‘god-fearing’ U.S.A. To be perfectly honest I think that having two of the most horrific conflicts of the twentieth century played out across the entire continent probably played quite a role in killing God. Moreso than the publication of an academic biology book. That and universal free education not controlled by the Church.
Meanwhile the world languishes in sorrow and suffering that results from rejecting absolute moral standards. With no absolute standards, we have no reason to care about what happens to our fellow man.
So the rejection of the ‘absolute moral standards’ is the reason that people around the world are suffering and dying? It has nothing to do with inequalities perpetuated by capitalism and class society then? Two things that predate the publication of On the Origin of Species by quite some time. Two things that are also consistently supported by religions everywhere.
As for these ‘absolute moral standards’, are you havin’ a laugh? The ‘morality’ in the Bible is so steeped in fear, ignorance, bigotry, hatred and superstition as to be unrecognisable as morality. Absolute morality is for sociopaths who see the world in black and white. An absolute morality allows no room for people to act in actual moral ways and forces people to commit immoral acts. I hate to drag out the old one about Nazis and Jews but what the hell. An absolute morality, like the 9th commandment mentioned earlier, would not have allowed someone hiding Jews from Nazis during the second world war to have lied to soldiers seeking out those Jews. To have allowed the Nazis to take Jews that one was hiding is clearly an immoral act yet it is demanded of an absolute morality.
We might as well seek only our personal gain regardless of the cost to others – acting exactly as evolutionary theory expects.
b) Why is it then that movements traditionally associated with atheism, communism and anarchism for example, are also mostly concerned with improving the lot every person on the planet? Strange that.
Could man create a religion with no God?
Evolution teaches us that man created God.
No it doesn’t, philosophy teaches us that.
If God created man, we have no right to ignore him.
Um, yes we do. We have every right to stand up and overthrow our cosmic dictator. Good thing for him he doesn’t exist. 😀
If man created God, we can easily ignore him.
The point, I think you’re missing it. 😀
What man has made he can do away with.
So as we ‘made’ our kids they are ours to dispose of as we see fit? These people really are quite sick. Anyone else notice the proliferation of gendered pronouns here?
In that case we are free to act as though God doesn’t exist, free to determine for ourselves what is right and wrong and how we will choose to live life.
And just to finish off the introduction we have the coup de grâce of yet another dishonest ‘quote’. This time it is the former director of the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique in France Prof. Louis Bounoure. Do these people think that no one speaks more than one language? Talk Origins actually got in touch with the CNRS and you can see the results of their correspondence here.
That’s it for this week, next week we will have Science, the Bible and Wrong Assertions. Fun, Fun, Fun.
